Buying crypto in Gjakova: one office, no ATM
Gjakova (Đakovica) has exactly one place to buy or sell crypto in person: the exCoins office on Skënderbeu street. The nearest crypto ATMs are in Prizren and Peja, so for anything beyond small cash amounts, buying online is usually simpler.

Gjakova is Kosovo’s sixth-largest municipality, with 78,699 residents in the 2024 census, yet its crypto infrastructure fits on a single line: one exCoins exchange office, no ATM, and no branch of the only centrally licensed operator. This page covers what you can actually do there, how far you need to travel for a machine, and when your phone is the better option.
The short answer for Gjakova
If you are a visitor, a returning member of the diaspora or a local who just wants a small amount of Bitcoin or USDT for cash, walk into the exCoins office on Skënderbeu street during weekday business hours or on Saturday morning. If you need crypto at night or on a Sunday, the nearest 24/7 machines are about 40 km away in Prizren or Peja. And if you are moving more than a few hundred euros, an online platform funded by bank transfer will almost always leave you with more coins.

Inside the exCoins office on Skënderbeu street
exCoins runs the largest physical crypto network in Kosovo, with 13 offices and 5 ATMs. Its Gjakova branch keeps shorter hours than the Pristina shops: Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00, Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00, closed on Sunday. If you work office hours yourself, Saturday morning is your realistic window.
The office handles six coins in both directions: BTC, ETH, , XRP, TRX and LTC. The converter on the exCoins website shows a 2% commission, well below the of a crypto ATM. What you actually pay depends on the rate quoted at the counter, so ask for the final euro amount before handing over cash and compare it with a live price on your phone.
Bring a wallet address you control. Staff send the coins to whatever address you give them, and a mistake is permanent. With USDT in particular, check whether your wallet expects or another network. If you have never set up a wallet, read our guide to crypto wallets first; it takes ten minutes.
The ATM that was announced but never showed up
In 2024 exCoins announced a new crypto ATM at a HIB Petrol station in Gjakova. When we checked on 20 October 2026, that machine was missing from the official ATM list on the exCoins website and from public directories such as Coin ATM Radar. Whether it was never installed or later removed, we could not confirm. Either way, do not drive to a petrol station expecting to find it.
The two closest working machines both belong to exCoins and both sit at HIB Petrol forecourts. One is in Prizren on Ukë Bytyqi street, on the road towards Suharekë (Theranda). The other is in Peja on Zahir Pajaziti street. Both are roughly 40 km from Gjakova and run around the clock.

Not on CBK listThere is one practical difference. According to exCoins, the Prizren machine also buys crypto back from you, paying out euros. Selling at the Peja machine is unconfirmed. If your trip is about cashing out, head to Prizren. For the exCoins machine at Maxi 24 in Pristina, Coin ATM Radar reports these tiers: up to €500 with no verification, €500–1,000 with an SMS code, and full above €1,000. We could not confirm the same tiers for Prizren and Peja, so carry your ID. Also do the maths on the trip: a 4.8% markup on €100 is about €4.80, often less than the fuel for the round trip. Our Kosovo Bitcoin ATM guide covers fees in detail, and the Prizren options are on the Prizren crypto page.
What the Central Bank’s licence list tells you
Kosovo passed a dedicated crypto law (Law No. 08/L-295) in late 2024, and the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo (CBK, known locally as BQK) set 1 March 2026 as the deadline for crypto exchange operators to apply for a licence. On the CBK’s list of licensed institutions dated 15 October 2026, exactly one crypto operator appears: CoinPrime SH.P.K. of Ferizaj. exCoins is not on that list. We do not know whether it has a pending application, and we are not suggesting anything beyond what the public list shows.
Why should you care? A licensed operator must publish its prices and fees, keep client money in segregated accounts and run a complaints procedure. If something goes wrong with an operator that is not on the list, your options are thinner. That does not mean the Skënderbeu office does not work; it means you should think twice before bringing large sums.
For a licensed alternative, the nearest CoinPrime office to Gjakova is on Tirana street in Prizren, open Monday to Saturday 10:00–18:00. CoinPrime asks for ID on every transaction, even below €1,000, and caps cash at €1,000 per 24 hours; above that you pay by bank transfer with a 1% commission. The wider legal picture, including the July 2026 market inspections, is in our explainer on whether crypto is legal in Kosovo.
Your options from Gjakova, side by side
This is everything realistically available to someone based in Gjakova, with costs as published or reported on 20 October 2026. The last column shows whether you can turn crypto back into euros at that point.
| Point | Street | Hours | Reported cost | Selling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| exCoins office, Gjakova | Skënderbeu street | Mon–Fri 09–17, Sat 09–16 | ≈2% (website converter) | Yes |
| HIB Petrol 2 ATM, Prizren | Ukë Bytyqi street | 24/7 | ≈4.8% buy | Yes (per exCoins) |
| HIB Petrol ATM, Peja | Zahir Pajaziti street | 24/7 | ≈4.8% buy | Unconfirmed |
| CoinPrime office, Prizren | Tirana street | Mon–Sat 10–18 | Not published | Yes, with ID |
| Online platform | Your phone | Any time | ≈0.25% + bank fee | Yes, to a bank account |
For small cash amounts, the town office wins on cost and convenience. The ATMs only make sense when you are already in Prizren or Peja, or when it is Sunday and you cannot wait. For anything larger, online platforms charge around 0.25% per trade, though your bank may add a fee because euro transfers from Kosovo still go by rather than SEPA.
One caveat on cards: most platforms treat Kosovo-issued cards as non-EU, which pushes card fees up to several percent. Our guide to buying crypto with a card in Kosovo explains which platforms charge least, and the bank transfer guide covers Raiffeisen, ProCredit, TEB and BKT.
Cashing out when you live in Gjakova
Selling is where most of the questions come from. You have three routes. First, the exCoins office: you send coins to the address the cashier gives you and receive euros over the counter. Ask how many network confirmations they wait for before paying; Bitcoin can take a while, USDT on Tron is usually much quicker.
Second, the Prizren ATM, at around 5.2% for sales according to Coin ATM Radar data for exCoins machines. Third, and cheapest for larger sums, sell on an online platform and withdraw to your Kosovo bank account. That takes one to three business days but means you never carry a large amount of cash. Under the CBK regulation, licensed operators cannot pay out cash above €1,000 anyway. Remember that profits are taxable: Kosovo’s Tax Administration treats crypto gains as income, and our Kosovo crypto tax guide walks through examples. All exit routes are compared on the cash-out page.
Crossing into Albania at Qafa e Prushit
Gjakova is the nearest Kosovo town to the Qafa e Prushit border crossing towards Tropoja in northern Albania. If you are heading that way and hoping to pick up crypto on the other side, lower your expectations: public ATM directories list no crypto ATM anywhere in Albania as of 20 October 2026. Albania does have its own digital-asset law (Law 66/2020) with a licensing regime run by its Financial Supervisory Authority since 2022, but that has not translated into machines along the road.
For diaspora families sending money home to Gjakova, a related question is whether crypto beats a bank or money-transfer app. World Bank price data suggests that from Germany, Wise or Revolut are usually cheaper than a USDT round trip once you add the cost of selling in Kosovo. The numbers are on our sending money to Kosovo with crypto page. For every other town with crypto points, see the Kosovo crypto map, or the Peja page for the other neighbouring ATM.
