Buying crypto in size from Kosovo: how OTC really works

Above €10,000, the fee matters less than the price you actually get filled at. International OTC desks start at $100,000–200,000, euros move by SWIFT, and every euro needs a documented origin.

Say you run a construction firm in Prizren, sold a flat in Stuttgart, or simply want €150,000 of Bitcoin on a balance sheet. The usual routes close one by one: ATMs and exchange offices stop at €1,000, a big market order on an exchange moves the price against you, new accounts come with limits, and a cash meetup is a fast way to lose the lot. This page is for businesses, high-net-worth individuals and diaspora families moving serious money: how OTC desks work, where their minimums start, how settlement runs without SEPA, and what documents to have ready.

What an OTC desk actually does

An desk sells you size at a single price. Instead of placing an order on the public market, you send a : “buy BTC for €250,000”. The desk replies with one price, fixed for a short window. Accept it and the whole amount fills at that price, however thin the market is at that moment.

For most people, OTC is overkill. At €5,000 or €20,000, a large exchange with a limit order gets you within a whisker of the market price. OTC earns its keep when your order is big enough to move the price by itself, or when you need organised bank settlement with a named contact, for accounting reasons or to satisfy your own bank’s compliance team. At the international desks, that starts at around $100,000.

The hidden cost of a big exchange order: slippage

The calculator above shows the exchange fee, about 0.25%. For large amounts that is not the whole bill. An order book only holds so much Bitcoin at each price level. A big market order eats the cheapest offers first, then the next, and so on up the book. The gap between the price on screen and your average fill is called , and it grows with the size of your order relative to the market’s .

We cannot put one number on it: slippage depends on the coin, the time of day and the euro pair. BTC/USDT books are usually far deeper than BTC/EUR. Two tools help: a , which caps what you pay, and splitting the purchase into tranches over hours or days. An OTC desk takes that execution risk off you and charges for it inside a fixed spread. The 0.2% used for the OTC row in the calculator is purely illustrative: desks do not publish fees, and your quote depends on size and timing.

OTC desk minimums compared

Binance, Kraken, OKX and CEX.IO do not list Kosovo among their restricted countries (Bybit’s official list could not be reached when we checked). That does not guarantee an OTC desk will take you on, because OTC onboarding is stricter than a retail account. Published minimums as of 20 October 2026:

Minimum trade sizes at major OTC desks (October 2026)
DeskMinimumFormatNote
Binance OTC$200,000RFQ, fixed quoteSee our Binance review
Kraken OTC$100,000OTC deskSome sources cite $50,000
OKX block trading$100,000Block tradeSee our OKX review
Bybit OTCNo public minimumOTC desk—
CEX.IO PrimeNo public minimumInstitutional serviceSee our CEX.IO review

At the 20 October rate, $100,000 was about €89,000, which is why the calculator only shows the OTC row from roughly €85,000. CEX.IO, operating since 2013, is registered as a money services business with FinCEN in the US and with the FCA in the UK, and offers Prime to institutional clients without a published minimum. Kraken holds a MiCA licence from the Central Bank of Ireland and accepts Kosovo residents on its main platform; details in our Kraken review.

Moving euros in and out of Kosovo by SWIFT

In OTC the hard part is not the trade, it is the money. Kosovo is not yet in , so every transfer from Raiffeisen, ProCredit, TEB, BKT or another Kosovo bank to a desk in the EU goes by SWIFT. Parliament passed the amended anti-money-laundering law on 15 October 2026, and the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo (CBK) says this clears the way for the final steps, but until admission, budget 1–3 business days and fees at the sending bank, any intermediary and the receiving bank.

Percentage fees are capped at the top end. Raiffeisen Kosovo’s business tariff for incoming international payments is 0.20% with a €15 minimum and €750 maximum, so selling €100,000 back into a business account costs €200 on receipt. We have not verified retail or outgoing tariffs; ask your bank before the first transfer. Desks often require funds on account before they execute, so always send a test transfer first, and confirm the desk’s bank details in writing through its official channel. Treat any email that “updates the IBAN at the last minute” as an attack until proven otherwise.

Source of funds, source of wealth: the paperwork

Before any large trade, both the desk and your bank will want to understand two things. is about this transaction: where the €80,000 you are sending came from. Source of wealth is about you: how you built your overall assets. For individuals, desks typically ask for several months of bank statements, a sale contract for property or a business, inheritance papers, payslips and tax returns. For companies, add the registration certificate from ARBK (Kosovo’s business registry), articles of association, the list of beneficial owners and financial statements.

Build the file before anyone asks. The desk assesses you under its own jurisdiction’s rules, and a clean file can cut onboarding from weeks to days. If the crypto you plan to sell came from earlier purchases, keep the full transaction history from every platform; Kosovo’s Tax Administration (ATK) will want the same trail.

Kosovo’s cash thresholds for large amounts

For large sums, Kosovo law has all but closed the cash route. The thresholds worth knowing:

Key payment and cash thresholds in Kosovo (October 2026)
ThresholdWhat appliesSource
€1,000At crypto operators: ID mandatory; above this (or linked transactions within 24h), payment only via a bank accountCBK regulation, 2025
€2,000Cash payments above this between a business and an individual banned since 1 June 2026Ministry of Finance (secondary source)
€10,000Cash transactions from this amount reported to the Financial Intelligence UnitLaw 05/L-096 (secondary source)
€10,000Cash deposits above this need a source-of-funds declaration at ProCreditProCredit price list, 13 Aug 2026

These rules are one reason private “Bitcoin for cash” deals in large amounts are so dangerous. In April 2026, the group suspected of taking €12,000 from USDT buyers in Ferizaj also attempted a €50,000 scheme in Kaçanik. The case is told in our P2P guide, and other schemes in crypto scams in Kosovo. The full legal framework, from Law 08/L-295 to CBK licensing, is in is crypto legal in Kosovo.

What exists locally: no OTC desk, one licensed operator

As of 20 October 2026 we found no dedicated OTC desk based in Kosovo. What exists is the bank-transfer service of local operators. CoinPrime SH.P.K. of Ferizaj, the only crypto operator on the CBK’s list of 15 October 2026, accepts amounts above €1,000 by bank transfer only, at a 1% commission. On €50,000 that is €500, more than a large desk’s spread, but settlement stays inside Kosovo with no SWIFT leg. See our CoinPrime review. The exCoins network, with 13 offices, does not appear on the CBK list and publishes no terms for large trades.

If you are selling a large position and want euros in hand, the last step always runs through a bank: ProCredit lists €15,000 a day as its branch cash limit. Exit routes from ATMs to bank transfers are compared in selling crypto for cash in Kosovo, and bank transfers in both directions in buying crypto by bank transfer.

Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia: any better?

Some readers ask whether a service across the border would be simpler. The legal picture varies a lot. In Serbia, ECD has held a National Bank of Serbia licence since 16 December 2022 and has points in Belgrade and Novi Sad that work with verified accounts; foreigners should note that Serbia does not recognise Kosovo crossings as international entry points. Albania’s Law 66/2020 set up a licensing regime under its Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF), applied from 2022. Montenegro has run AML-based registration of providers since March 2025, but had no registered providers as of February 2026. North Macedonia has no crypto law; Skopje has a single Bitomat ATM in East Gate Mall, with a buy spread of about 6%.

For large sums this rarely solves anything: cross-border settlement still runs by SWIFT, the same source-of-funds documents are required, and an intermediary in another jurisdiction adds one more link to the chain.

What a typical OTC trade looks like

  1. Prepare your file

Passport or ID, proof of address, source-of-funds evidence and, for companies, ARBK documents and beneficial owners.

  2. Open an account and apply for OTC

Contact the desk through its official website. Enhanced checks can take days.

  3. Test the transfer

Send a small SWIFT payment from your Kosovo bank to see the real fees and timing.

  4. Request the quote

Once funds are on account, ask for a price on the full amount and compare it with the market price at that moment.

  5. Withdraw to your own wallet

Don’t leave large balances on a platform. For long-term holdings, an offline hardware wallet is the norm.

For that last step, read our crypto wallet guide. And remember tax: buying is not taxed, but ATK treats profit on sale as income, as explained in crypto tax in Kosovo. If you are in the diaspora and weighing crypto against bank transfers for sending money home, see sending money to Kosovo.

Frequently asked questions

What is an OTC trade in crypto?

Over-the-counter means trading off the public order book. You ask a desk for a price on your full amount, it quotes one fixed price for a short window, and if you accept, the trade executes at that price without pushing the market against you.

How much do you need for a crypto OTC desk?

It depends on the desk. Binance OTC takes requests for quote from $200,000; Kraken and OKX start at $100,000 (some sources cite $50,000 for Kraken); Bybit and CEX.IO Prime publish no minimum. Below those levels, a regular exchange account with limit orders is usually the better tool.

How do I buy a large amount of Bitcoin from Kosovo?

Open and fully verify an exchange account weeks ahead, test a small SWIFT transfer from your Kosovo bank, then either buy in limit-order tranches or, from about $100,000, request an OTC quote. Have your source-of-funds documents ready. Bank transfer routes are explained in buying crypto by bank transfer.

Is there an OTC desk based in Kosovo?

We found no dedicated Kosovo-based OTC desk as of 20 October 2026. Local operators handle amounts above €1,000 by bank transfer only; CoinPrime, the one operator licensed by the Central Bank, charges 1%. See our CoinPrime review.

Can I pay cash for a large Bitcoin purchase in Kosovo?

Not at a licensed operator. CBK rules route anything above €1,000 through a bank account, and according to secondary sources, cash payments above €2,000 between a business and an individual have been banned since 1 June 2026. Large private cash deals have ended in fraud, as in Ferizaj in April 2026.

How are gains on a large crypto purchase taxed in Kosovo?

Buying is not taxed; profit on sale is. Individuals pay 0%, 8% or 10% under the personal income tax bands, companies 10% corporate income tax. Worked examples in crypto tax in Kosovo.
