Mitrovica is one of only two large Kosovo towns, with Gjakova, that have no crypto ATM at all. The southern part has a single office; the north has no service we could confirm. This page sets out what you can do on either side of the river and where the nearest alternative is.

One city, two municipalities, two situations

Mitrovica is made up of two municipalities divided by the Ibar river. South Mitrovica had 64,742 residents in the 2024 census. For North Mitrovica the figure of 7,920 is only an estimate, because the census there was boycotted; the real number may differ. The difference in crypto infrastructure is just as stark: the city’s only physical point is in the south.

On the map, the Mitrovica region also includes Vushtrri (61,528 residents), where we found neither an office nor an ATM. That makes it one of only two regions in Kosovo, with Gjakova, without a single crypto ATM.

Counts include nearby towns in the same region. Boundaries: geoBoundaries / OpenStreetMap (CC BY-SA).

exCoins lists its Mitrovica office on Shemsi Ahmeti street. The operator does not state which part of the city it is in; going by the street name and the postcode, it is in the south. Hours are shorter than in Pristina: Monday to Saturday, 09:00–17:00. The office buys and sells six coins (BTC, ETH, USDT, XRP, TRX, LTC), and the exCoins website converter shows a 2% commission. exCoins is not on the list of the CBK (Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo) dated 15 October 2026.

Mind the hours: the office closes at 17:00, an hour earlier than the offices in Pristina, Prizren and Peja, and stays shut on Sundays. On a €200 purchase, the 2% commission is about €4, far less than the roughly 4.8% markup at the Pristina ATMs. If you can make it in the daytime, the southern office is the cheapest physical option in the region.

CoinPrime, the only licensed operator, has no point in Mitrovica. If you want to deal with a licensed operator, the closest are CoinPrime’s office and ATM on Rruga B in Pristina, where applies to every amount.

Why Mitrovica has no crypto ATM

Neither operator lists an ATM in Mitrovica. Coin ATM Radar shows one point in the city, but the directory also counts , and on our evidence that point is very likely the exCoins office itself. We could not confirm it as a machine.

In practice, that means no physical option in town at night or on a Sunday. The nearest ATMs are in Pristina, about 40 km away: exCoins at Maxi 24 and HIB Petrol Kalabri, plus the CoinPrime machine on Rruga B. None of the Pristina machines buys USDT, so for that you need an office. If you travel by bus from Mitrovica, the HIB Petrol Kalabri machine is close to Pristina’s bus station, so there is no need to go into the centre. Addresses and hours are on crypto in Pristina. Vushtrri has no points either, as covered on our other towns page.

The north: euro, dinar and no services

In North Mitrovica we found no confirmed crypto office, ATM or service. A few social-media pages offer exchange services in Mitrovica, but none is on the CBK list and we could not verify them.

One rule hits the north directly: cash. Under the CBK regulation on cash operations, adopted on 27 December 2023 and in force since 1 February 2024, the euro became the only currency allowed for cash payments in Kosovo. In the northern municipalities, where the Serbian dinar was widely used, the CBK announced an easing plan on 12 February 2024 together with an information line, 0800-222-55. For crypto the consequence is simple: offices and ATMs in Kosovo take and pay out euros only.

Euro banknotes fanned out
Since 1 February 2024, cash payments in Kosovo are made in euros only.

From the north, the Jarinje and Bërnjak crossings lead into Serbia. There, ECD has points only in Belgrade and Novi Sad, charges 6.2% plus 500 dinars on purchases and requires a verified ECD account. For most residents, the southern office or Pristina remain the practical options.

Mining in the north: from the ban to the seizures

Mitrovica and the northern municipalities became known for crypto not because of shops, but because of . In the north, electricity had in practice gone unpaid since 1999, which made mining attractive. When the energy crisis of December 2021 led to a state of emergency, the government banned it.

  1. Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli bans crypto mining under the energy emergency.
  2. 272 units are seized in Leposavić; by 12 January the total reaches about 430.
  3. Around 175 units are seized in Zubin Potok, and 20 more two days later.
  4. Elektrosever starts billing electricity in the north at a flat rate.
  5. Police in North Mitrovica find weapons and 42 mining units, Kallxo reports.

Seizures were also reported in South Mitrovica and in Podujevë. Today, Article 7 of Law No. 08/L-295 allows mining only with power from the liberalised market or renewables you generate yourself; whether the 2022 ban has been formally repealed is unconfirmed. For regular purchases, most people in Mitrovica will find buying online simpler than travelling. A Kosovo bank card gets you crypto in minutes, while a transfer takes 1–3 working days. The steps are in how to buy Bitcoin in Kosovo, and offices across the country are listed under crypto exchange offices.

One last warning: with so few official points, some people turn to meeting strangers to swap USDT for cash. In April 2026 in Ferizaj, three buyers lost €12,000 at exactly such a meeting, according to police. If someone offers you crypto “cheaper than the office”, read crypto scams in Kosovo first.
